Listicle – Writing Content Creatively

Listicle Lesson - eMarkSheet Content Writing Course

Content is not limited to just blog, article or a web page. It is now consumed by the masses as script for podcast, narration for videos, social media posts and product descriptions / guides. These intriguing mediums have attracted and pushed more and more folks towards digital platforms. The migration from print and offline mediums to internet has reached the pinnacle.

And therefore, to address the growing population of internet users, bloggers, digital marketing companies and start-ups have tweaked the way the content is presented to the readers, especially in terms of formatting and structure. Gone are the days of long, bland, textual matter with little or no creative element. These entities have realized that to keep the readers hooked, the content needs to be intuitively structured and creatively interspersed with images and info graphics. That change is inevitable.

An important step towards this change is “LISTICLE”; a content structure which is rapidly evolving and increasingly being liked by the readers.

So, can every blog, article or webpage content be structured as listicle? The short answer is no. Most of the times, the title of the content will determine whether the same is to be written as a listicle, review / informative blog or simply as long form narrative sprinkled with info graphics ( article ). Nonetheless, subject, target audience and default length also matters.

Here are some distinct examples –

  1. 7 Ways Start-up can Build their Brands Quickly
The title and the subject are apt for listicle style content. We will talk about its structure and advantages later.
  2. The Technology behind Solar Powered Toy Drones
As you can see, the topic and the title offer a hint of a long narrative and therefore structuring it along the classic “Blog / Article” format makes sense.
  3. Features of “Martian Alien” earphones
The above topic appears like a review title / heading and therefore a perfect candidate for blog / web page. The features can be written as a listicle OR formatted appropriately to make it look and read interesting.
